It’s impossible to predict the future, but a series that’s been played for nearly a century could be coming to an end today as the Central College football is in Decorah to take on Luther as American Rivers Conference action kicks off.
The Norse are leaving the league at the end of this academic year to join the Midwest Conference, meaning today’s 86th meeting between two of the conference’s founding members could be its last.
It’s been one-sided as of late, with Central riding a 15-game winning streak and having won 41 of the last 43. The last six meetings have had an average margin of victory of nearly 45 points for the Dutch.
It’s not expected to be much more competitive today, as the Norse have scored just three points combined in getting off to an 0-2 start, while the Dutch are 2-0 and coming off a shutout victory over previously ranked Randolph-Macon, vaulting themselves to the number 25 spot in the last American Football Coaches Association poll.
Head Coach Jeff McMartin says that they are trying to walk the line this week between confidence and over-confidence.
“You never want to have an un-confident team, so you want to be confident and that’s good. You just don’t want to get complacent, arrogant and unfocused. That’s what you have to guard against when maybe you’ve played really well, you’re next game is maybe with an opponent who hasn’t gotten off to a good start and you kind of assume things and think things. You really want to avoid those things.”
Kickoff today is at 1:00 in Decorah. Trevor Castle and Don DeWaard will be on hand to call all the action live on 92.1 KRLS beginning with pregame at 12:35.
