Pella Christian High School’s theatre troupe returns to the stage tonight through Saturday to present their fall musical, The Sound of Music.
The musical has won five Tony awards, including Best Musical when it opened on Broadway in 1959, and is a staple of musical theatre. Set in Austria nearly 90 years ago, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. Ben Spronk, who will be playing the role of Captain von Trapp, says that Pella Christian’s set design will be something that will make their rendition of The Sound of Music unique.
“I think one of the standout parts of our musical is the set. I’ve kind of been involved with some of the set stuff and we’ve always got a lot of good help to build the set. There’s like five big pieces that split in two, and I think our painters do a really good job and it just looks really nice.”
The performances of the Sound of Music will take place at 7 pm tonight, Friday, and Saturday in the Vermeer Auditorium at Pella Christian High School.
