The City of Newton is considering providing funding to a local non-profit that has been neutering stray cats in town. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says Lucy’s Pet Pantry is expanding most all of their services, and that includes a Trap-Neuter-and Release program for stray cats.

“It’s been in place since 2023. They are getting ready to neuter their 1,000th cat since the program started. They have scaled up the program to where I think they hope to do 1,000 cats per year, so a pretty impressive group of volunteers that have pulled this together.”

According to Muckler, the City is considering contributing around $2,500 per year to Lucy’s Pet Pantry, which would cover the neutering of about 100 cats. The funding proposal will go before the Newton City Council as part of their budget-making process.
