Pella Christian senior Brecken Ritzert signed his national letter of intent to continue his academic, football and track and field careers at Central College on Wednesday.
A two-way presence for the Eagles’ football team, Ritzert threw for 1,301 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also being the leading rusher with 832 yards and six touchdowns as the team’s quarterback this past fall. Defensively, Ritzert posted the third most tackles for the Eagles with 44.5, while also recording six tackles for loss, an interception, and a fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown. Highlighting a successful track and field career for Ritzert on Eagle Lane was an eighth place finish in the long jump at last year’s State Track and Field meet. Ritzert said that Central’s ability to develop great multi-sport athletes was a key factor in his decision to compete in both football and track and field at the collegiate level.
“Central College does a really good job with their two sport athletes, especially the football players that go and do track. They have a really good reputation of building great track athletes, especially in that decathlete area through their football players. So ultimately, just knowing that they’ve done it before and they’re really good at it gives me peace about it and ultimately led me to that decision of wanting to try it out and see what it’s like.”
