The Newton boys and girls track and field teams won Thursday’s lightning-shortened Newton High School Co-ed Track Meet, while the Newton boys golf team finished 2nd at the Grinnell Tournament.

The Newton boys track and field team scored 116.5 points to win their portion of the co-ed meet by 24.5 points. The Cardinals competed against ten teams and produced four wins from the fourteen completed events. Ali Yahia won the 100m dash (11.88), Drew Bauer the 110m hurdles (16.10), and Cooper Christy the 400m run (51.67). The team of Bauer, Josh Lampe, Dro Felten, and Austin Arauz also finished first in the 4x110m Shuttle Hurdle Relay (1:01.00). The Newton boys also produced seven 2nd place finishes and four other top five performances.

The Newton girls track and field team scored 96.5 points for a 6.5 point win. Lauren Clarke won two events for the Cardinals, taking first place in the 100m dash (12.85) and the 200m dash (25.77). Mack Sims was first in the 400m hurdles (1:09.5) while Audrey Muckler won the 3000m run (11:07.40).  The Newton girls claimed eight other top five finishes, with four of them being 2nd place. The next team event for the Newton boys and girls track teams is the Grinnell Co-ed Track Meet on Tuesday.

The Newton boys golf team shot a 318 on the Grinnell College Golf Course on Thursday, earning them 2nd place at the Grinnell Tournament. The Cardinals were six shots behind the Tigers, who won their own seven-team tournament. All six Newton golfers finished in the top 20, with two making the top ten. Mason Smith was 7th with a 77, while Jackson Price was 8th with a 78. Grant Osby shot an 81 and was 11th, Kellan Hartgers was 12th with an 82, Cole Freese finished with an 86 for 16th, and Colin Freese took 19th with an 89. The Newton boys golf team will compete in the Oskaloosa Invite on Monday.
