A Newton man accused of attempting to have sex with a minor has been sentenced to five years in prison. District Court Judge David Faith handed down that sentence to 41-year-old Troy Anthony Edwards, after accepting his negotiated guilty plea to a class D felony charge of enticing a minor under 16 for a sexual purpose. An additional class D felony charge of grooming was dismissed. Edwards is to begin his prison term June 1st, and remains free on a $5,000 bond he posted on January 28th.

Newton Police arrested Edwards on January 22nd. They alleged he communicated online in a sexual nature with a Newton officer, who he thought was a minor, and attempted to meet the minor for sex in January.
