A public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 Certified Budget for the Newton School District will be held at 6:30 tonight at the EJH Beard Administration Building at 1302 First Avenue West. Newton School Superintendent Tom Messinger says an 8-cent levy reduction is being proposed.

“I feel like at a time when property tax rates are a hot topic, we are working to be as respectful of everybody’s tax dollars as we can be.”

Messenger says the levy rate reduction to $15.80 per thousand dollars of assessed value is possible through flexibility in the debt service and cash reserve levies, thanks to paying off the $835,000 of remaining debt from the recently-built Berg Middle School Building early. That’s going to save the district $253,000 in interest. Following the public hearing for the budget, the Newton School Board will go into their regular board session.
