
Newton soccer, track and field, and tennis teams competed on Thursday.
The Newton boys and girls soccer teams picked up their first and second wins of the season, respectively, and their first shut-outs
The Cardinal boys were the more aggressive team from the start at home against Clarke, and got their first win 2-0. Newton’s first goal was off the foot of Conner Vest with 23:42 left in the first half. Newton had six shots on goal, and one from Kent Montgomery with 12:38 left in the game went by the Indian’s goalie. The Cardinals’ also had seven corner kicks. The Newton boys are 1-7, and will play at Boone at 5:30 tonight. The Newton girls shut-out Albia in Albia 4-0. Aliviah Ross scored two goals, while Sophia Coady added a goal and an assist. Merissa Schiebel got her first goal of the season, and Lilliana Kono contributed an assist. The Cardinal girls are 2-3 and will host Colfax-Mingo and Nevada on Saturday at the Girls Soccer Cardinal Classic.
The Newton boys track and field team earned a second place finish at the Saydel Boys Track Invitational on Thursday, while the girls were second at the East Marshall Girls Invite
The Cardinals boys won three events and placed second at the Saydel Boys Track invitational. Lance Zaabel was first in the 3200m run (10:16.93), Zach Felton had the best discus throw (158’-01”), and Nick Milburn won the shot put (55’-07”). Milburn was also second in the discus (154’-01”) and the 4x400m relay (3:29.10) and the distance medley relay (3:40.42) also finished second. The Newton girls also took second place and had three first place finishes at the East Marshall Girls Invite. Lauren Clarke won the 200m dash (26.24), Audrey Muckler the 1500m run (5:15.50), and Alexis Sorensen the 3000m run (11:24.28). Sorensen was second in the 1500m run (5:17.05), as was Audrey Muckler in the 3000m run (11:33.10), and the 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay (1:10.29). The next competition for the Cardinal girls track and field team will be the Drake Relays on Thursday.
The Newton boys tennis team lost to Ballard and Nevada in Huxley on Thursday
The Newton boys tennis team lost to Ballard and Nevada. Ballard, who hosted the triangular, shut-out the Cardinals 11-0. Kaden Marshall in his singles match, and Marshall and Ethan Freese in their doubles match, lost 8-9 (5). Nevada won seven of the eleven matches against Newton. The four wins for the Cardinals were Marshall (8-5) and Keegan Bretthauer (8-4) in singles, and Bretthauer and Jarret Sweeney (8-4) and Maddox Bloom and Micah McPartlin (8-0) in doubles. Saturday, Newton will be among the eight teams competing at the Knoxville Invitational.
