
The Newton boys golf and soccer teams, the Cardinal baseball team, and the girls soccer team all competed on Tuesday.
Newton Golfer Jackson Price Qualifies For The State Golf Tournament But The Team’s Season Ends
Newton golfer Jackson Price finished third at the Class 3A District Golf Meet at Bos Landen Golf Course in Pella, qualifying him for the State Golf Tournament next week. The Cardinal boys team placed fourth with a score of 321 and missed a qualifying spot by five strokes. Price shot a 73 and was only one stroke behind the winner. He looks forward to his first State Tournament appearance.

Kellen Hartgers and Mason Smith shot 81’s and finished 14th and 15th. Grant Osby was 23rd with an 86, Cole Freese was 27th with an 88, and Carter Forst 35th with a 92. The Class 3A State Golf Tournament starts Tuesday at Gates Park Golf Course in Waterloo.
Newton Boys Soccer Loses First Round Match in Earlham
The Newton boys soccer team’s season is over after a 2-1 loss to Winterset at Earlham High School in a First Round Class 3A District 7 Match. The teams played a scoreless first half. The Cardinals had nine shots on goal. The one that found the net was by Aiden Robson with an assist by Hudson Meyer. The Newton Boys soccer team ends the season 2-14-2. Kent Montgomery and Troy Ramsey tied for the most goals with six each, and goalkeeper Henry Allen finished the year with 159 saves while allowing 56 goals.
Newton Baseball Opens Season With Home Win Over Grinnell
The Newton baseball team opened the season at home against Grinnell and beat the Tigers 3-2. The Cardinals got two runs in the bottom of the 2nd and one in the bottom of the 5th, while Grinnell scored single runs in the top of the 3rd and 6th innings. Carter Lehrman struck out the side in the top of the seventh to seal the win. Five of Newton’s hits were doubles, with Mason Mendez hitting two of them. The Cardinals’ three RBIs were off the bats of Mendez, Drew Bauer, and Kreytein Wickliffe. The Newton Baseball team is back on the diamond at H.A. Lynn Baseball Field at 7:30 p.m. tonight against Saydel.
Newton Girls Soccer Beats Clarke In Shortened Game
The Newton girls soccer team defeated Clarke at H.A. Lynn Stadium 10-0. The game ended with 11:22 left in the second half when Sophia Coady scored the Cardinals’ tenth goal on a penalty kick. That was the seventh goal of the second half for Newton. Coady had two goals on the night, along with two assists. Aliviah Ross had four goals, Payton Carkhuff two, and Adalynn Groves and Kaylee Guthrie both had one. The Newton girls soccer team is now 6-8-1 and will host Boone on Thursday.
