Pella Christian swept Norwalk 3-0 to start off Little Hawkeye Conference volleyball play last night 25-16, 25-23 and 25-15. Jenna Horstman led the way with 11 kills while Meredith Fopma contributed 10 kills. Paige Zylstra tallied 5 blocks, Bekah Posthuma dished out 28 assists and Ashley Van Kooten led the defense with 16 digs while Courtney Van Kooten added 15 and Darci Jansen had 14 digs. Although the final results may not reflect it coach John Evenhouse says the Eagles struggled all night long passing and just didn’t seem to have the intensity they’ve shown in previous matches. With several younger players stepping in to fill holes left by graduation this year Evenhouse says having his setter Bekah Posthuma back has been a big plus. He says although he’s been pleased with their progress so far, they’re still trying to put all the pieces together to make a run at a LHC championship and state tournament berth and may change things up a bit in coming weeks. The Eagles are 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play and are off until Saturday when they head to the Iowa City West Invitational.
