A Pella company has completed putting in parking and access to a fishing dock at Newton’s Cardinal Pond. The City of Newton hired TK Concrete to install ADA parking spaces and additional gravel parking at the pond, which is located by the Arbor Estates housing subdivision in northeast Newton. Newton Community Development Director Erin Chambers says an ADA common pad was also needed for access to a fishing dock that was funded by a $125,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
“It’s an ADA accessible fishing pier. A prefabricated aluminum fishing pier. And then, we will start working on trails. Eventually, the long term plan is to have trails completely around Cardinal Pond.”
Chambers says Cardinal Pond has become a well-used and valued amenity for the community. TK Concrete in Pella submitted a low $34,380 bid for the parking improvements, but completed the project for $250 less than that.
