The CEO of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity was in Newton on Tuesday for the dedication of the first Habitat for Humanity Home constructed in Newton in over five years. Jasper County Habitat for Humanity operates under the leadership of the Greater Des Moines organization. CEO Lance Henning said the new three-bedroom home at 501 South 2nd Avenue West is the result of a lot of people coming together.
“And that’s what you see here when neighbors come together and companies come together in the City of Newton, all working to make this happen.”
Henning says they look forward to the next Habitat for Humanity Home in Newton, which will be built two lots away from the new house. A woman named Cassidy, who is an amputee that has undergone over 20 surgeries and has a pre-teenaged son and daughter, will close on the new house on Thursday. Community Partnership Coordinator for Jasper County Habitat for Humanity Becca Decker says the organization’s requirements for a homeowner include the mortgage not exceeding more than 30% of the individual’s income, putting 200 hours of sweat equity into the home, and completing different construction and finance classes.
