The Newton boys baseball team lost to Saydel at H.A. Lynn Field 6-4. The Cardinals trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the first three Newton batters drew walks to load the bases. Mason Mendez then hit a line drive just off the second base bag that was caught by the shortstop, who stepped on second to double off the Cardinal runner at second base. Newton then scored the runner from third on a wild pitch, but the base runner attempting to advance to third was thrown out to end the game. The Cardinals four runs came on five hits, including a triple from Gabe Otto. Aaden Grimm had a double while Mendez, Lane Rozendaal, and Dakota Winkleman added singles. Landry Rausch had Newton’s only RBI. The Cardinals are now 1-1, and will play at Bondurant-Farrar on Thursday.
