Newton sophomore Kaden Marshall claimed the Class 1A District Singles Championship at the District Meet in Boone on Saturday, qualifying him for the state tournament in Waterloo May 27th and 28th. Last year, Cardinal senior Ethan Valtman ended Newton’s 20-year drought for advancing a singles player to state. Marshall says he’s learned a lot from Valtman.

“He helped me learn a lot. I’ve played with him a lot too, so that helps. He’s a nice guy. I like playing with him. He’s always giving people tips.”

Marshall earned his way to the State Singles Championship with a bye in the District Meet’s first round. He then had a two set 6-0, 6-0 win in the quarterfinal, a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the semifinal, and a default by his opponent in the final. Newton’s #2 Singles player, sophomore Grayson Main, lost his first match 6-1, 6-1.

Both of the Cardinals’ Doubles teams won their opening matches in straight sets, but lost in the quarterfinals. Keegan Bretthauer and Noah Tremel opened with a 6-0, 6-4 win before losing their second match 6-4, 6-1. Micah Mcpartlin and Jack Springer started with a 6-2, 6-4 win, and then lost 6-2, 6-3.
