
Three Newton boys’ teams and one girls’ team competed on the road on Tuesday
Newton Boys Track And Field Team Wins Don Newell Classic
The Newton boys track and field team won the eight-team Don Newell Classic in Ottumwa, winning seven events and scoring 141 points. Drew Bauer won the 110m hurdles (15.41) and Austin Arauz was second (15.49). Bauer also placed second in the 400m hurdles (57.02), while Cooper Christ and Reagan Maki finished first (2:01.60) and second (2:01.62) in the 800m run. Lance Zaabel won the 1600m run (4:49.14) while Nick Milburn was first in the shot put (57”-01”) and Zach Felten was second in the Discuss (145’-09”). The Cardinals 800m Sprint Medley (1:35.66), 1600m Distance Medley (3:44:42), and the 4x100m (43.87) relays all finished first. The 4x400m (3:35.30) and the 4x110m Shuttle Hurdle (1:04.54) relays were second.
The full Newton boys track and field team returns to competition on Thursday in the Newton Cardinal Co-ed Invite at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
Newton Girls Golf Gets First Win Of The Season In Colfax
The Newton girls golf team took first place, defeating Baxter and Grandview Christian, at a triangular in Colfax. The Cardinals covered the course at Colfax Country Club in 232 strokes, for a seven-stroke win.
Addie Ratcliff was third with a score of 51. Teeah Yoder was sixth with a 58, while Brooklyn Sterling and Molly Meyer also finished in the top ten with a 61 and 62 for eighth and ninth.
The Little Hawkeye Conference Meet at Indianola on Wednesday is the next event for the Newton girls golf team.
Newton Boys Golf Takes Second At Second LHC Meet In Oskaloosa
The Newton boys golf team finished second at the Second Little Hawkeye Conference Golf Meet in Oskaloosa. The Cardinals shot a 319 while Pella won the event at Edmundson Golf Course with a score of 302. Mason Smith had Newton’s lowest score at 77, as five of the Cardinal golfers finished in the top half of the 30-player field. Smith was third, while Cole Freese placed seventh with an 80. Carter Forst finished tenth and Jackson Price was eleventh, as they both shot 81’s. Grant Osby was 13th with an 83, and Kellan Hartgers was 21st with an 86.
The Newton boys golf team plays again today at 11 a.m. in the Williamsburg Golf Invitational at Stone Creek Golf Club.
Newton Boys Tennis Falls To Grinnell
The Newton boys tennis team was defeated in Grinnell, as the Tigers won eight of the eleven matches. Two of the Cardinals’ three wins were in the #3 and #5 singles matches. Grayson Main lost the first set 3-6, but won set two 6-2 and the tiebreaker 10-5. Keegan Bretthauer won his #5 match in straight sets of 6-3 and 6-4. Newton’s #5 doubles team of Maddox Bloom and Micah McPartlin prevailed 7-5, 3-6. 10-5.
The Newton boys tennis team will be at Pella on Monday.
