
The Newton boys and girls track and field teams both claimed second-place at Thursday’s State Qualifying Track and Field Meet at Pella High School. The Cardinal boys produced automatic qualifiers in seven events, while the girls have athletes advancing in four.
Nick Milburn won the discus (152’-10”) and the shot put (55’-99.25”), Isaiah Hansen the High Jump (6’-94”), and Drew Bauer the 400m hurdles (1:12.25). Second place qualifiers were Zach Felton in the discus (152’-04”) and the 4x800m relay team of Brody Wobschall, Reagan Maki, Dawson Maki, and Cooper Christy (8:07.96) and the 1600m distance medley relay team of Nick Thomason, Ali Yahia, Dawson Maki, and Christy (3:36.12). The Newton girls had one first place finish by the 4x100m shuttle hurdle relay team of Mack Sims, Camryn Klein, Ashlyn Karsten, and Tori White (1:06.22). Sims also earned a state berth in the 400m hurdles with a second place finish (1:07.34), while Lauren Clarke was second in the 100m dash (12.71) and White was the runner-up in the 100m hurdles (15.71).
The Iowa State Track and Field Meet will be held May 21-23, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
